Working With Injured Clients

As personal trainers, it’s never our role to diagnose pain. However, when working
with the general population we will regularly encounter clients with aches,
pains and niggling injuries that require management and exercise modification.
Working alongside the relevant medical professional, this course is designed to
help you better understand modifiable principles such as volume, intensity, force
management and exercise modification to help your clients work around pain (where
possible) and continue to move towards their goals whilst staying within our scope
of practice. This course is not about rehabilitating clients post-injury, it’s about
understanding how we can help clients continue to exercise and do the things they
love in the presence of everyday aches and pains.
Not only will we explore these principles, but we have also provided you with a library
of POSSIBLY suitable exercises for clients with common aches, pains or injuries.
We should note there is rarely, if ever, a “best” exercise for pain management.
Sometimes exercises can be modified, and other times they may need to be removed
completely. It is therefore important to understand some of the underlying principles
before we select the appropriate methods (exercises) from the library.
Before undertaking this course please remember your first duty as a personal trainer
is to DO NO HARM. Pain is a complex topic and, to reiterate, your role as a trainer
is never to diagnose pain. If pain is persistent in a client do your due diligence and
refer out to a trusted medical professional in your network, then work alongside that
professional by utilising the principles outlined in this course to help keep your client
active despite their pain or niggle.

Strong Ageing

If you are a personal trainer or a health coach and work with any clients who are 55 or older, this is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about their training needs and become a true expert. Even if you don’t train senior clients, you will learn a ton of valuable stuff about movement, exercise modifications, and more.

By the end of this course, you will:

Have an understanding of the definitions of older adults and knowledge about changes to their muscles, joints and motivation.
Have an understanding of the pros and cons of inactivity and activity for older adults.
Have a list of appropriate exercises for older adults, together with templates for workouts that are modifiable.
Have an understanding of the impact of chronic illnesses or age-related illnesses and how to work around them, and what modifications you can make to exercises for people in pain.
Know what questions you should ask a doctor, physio or physician who oversees your older clients, to enable you to better understand your work with them.
Know what assessment and client history is relevant to you as a trainer or practitioner.
Know how to get older people moving again, increasing motivation and adherence.
Know specific progressions / regressions to exercises that you may use when working with this demographic.
